There are several new Internet scams flying around the net these days. It seemed to have started with greeting card offers, as you may have read about a few weeks ago in this column. The same type of scam seems to have evolved to a new form. Just yesterday I received several messages “Welcoming me as a New Member” to several different types of sites and also some with offers of “Free Software Tools”. What a nice bunch of fellows, eh? Not! Each email included a link which if followed would lead to a website designed to infect your computer with viruses. It is worth noting that each of these sites used a numbered IP address instead of a domain name which is suspicious in itself. It is a jungle out there so one has to be careful. One thing working in our favor is that these scams are easy to spot. The big tip for me was that I received several messages in the same day for much the same thing with different names. The shear number made them stand out. Let’s hope that these guys don’t get any smarter.
